An exceptional example of late-19th-century craftsmanship, this ornate 1860s piano stool is beautifully carved from solid English walnut and bears the maker’s mark “HOWE” on the underside — a name long associated with quality musical furnishings of the period.

This is a truly characterful piece, wonderfully heavy, sturdy, and fully functional. It has just undergone a complete mechanical service, including the installation of a newly machined solid-brass threaded nut within the base, providing smooth, reliable height adjustment for many years to come.

Despite its age, the stool is structurally excellent. A historic repair to the lower base is visible on close inspection, but it remains strong and secure and does nothing to diminish the elegance of the piece.

The richly carved tri-leg base, turned column supports, and luxurious deep-red upholstered seat capture the spirit of Victorian opulence. One can easily imagine this stool gracing the stage of a grand theatre, accompanying a pianist in an ornate music hall, or sitting proudly in one of Britain’s great houses throughout the past 150 years.
